Fiscal Year 2010: No Current Data Available Fiscal Year 2011: An estimated 1,084 applications are expected to be reviewed and an estimated 316 competing applications are expected to be funded. The Institute supports a wide variety of basic and applied research studies concerning balance control, hearing, the senses of smell and taste, as well as speech, voice, and language. Encouraging progress has been made in each of these areas and is expected to continue. Clinical topics under investigation include vertigo; mild, moderate and profound hearing impairment; the design and efficacy of hearing aids and cochlear implants; aphasia; specific language impairment; disorders of taste and smell; stuttering, and voice disorders.
